Giant Killers

On Friday, five Maple Leafs competed in the  IHSA Boys State Track & Field Meet.  All competing athletes battled adverse weather conditions that included six weather delays which included clearing the entire stadium due to lightning danger, driving rains, and a high temperature of only 58 degrees with strong winds.
  • Following a lengthy delay, Andrew Walter got things going in the Long Jump.  Andrew's best jump of 20' 11 1/2" came up just 9 inches short of making the finals.  The Long Jump tht started with a tailwind which shortly became a headwind as the wind shifted.  Unfortunately, once a jumping event has started, the direction can't be changes.  Given that Andrew jumped in the 4th flight it is safe to say that he had a tough assignment jumping into a strong headwind.
  • Next up was the 400 meter Relay.  The Leafs came in ranked 33rd off the sectional qualifying and but hoped to make a run at the school record which they had just missed at Sectionals.  Sadly, the horrible weather made that goal impossible as the boys went out and pushed the pedal to the floor anyway.  The team of Sophomore Aaron Kotecki and seniors Andrew Walter, Jacob Kuban, and Shane Reschke ran a strong 44.06 FAT and placed a strong 5th in their heat and ended up 31st overall.  Great efforts men especially considering the conditions.
  • Jacob Kuban was scratched from the 400 meter dash to save his effort for the 1600 meter relay.
  • The 1600 meter Relay wasn't run until darkness had hit and the meet was hours behind the time schedule.  The weather conditions were terrible and the Leafs were one of the few teams that actually ran faster than their sectional times.  Seeded 35th coming into the meet they ended up with the 8th fastest time (top 9 make the finals and earn all-state honors.)  Sounds pretty good so far....  The IHSA takes the heat winners automatically so not so fast.   Senior Jacob Kuban exploded from the blocks and rocketed to a 50.32 split.  The time was Jacob's fasted lead-off leg of the season and put the team in excellent shape.  Look for Jacob at Illinois State next season as he moves to the collegiate ranks.  Senior Shane Reschke took the baton next and kept up the heat as he put down another phenominal leg of 50.50.  Shane had a great season and will continue his career next year at Monmouth College.  Freshman Billy Hamer took the stick next and roared to a season best split of 52.0 and the Leafs were rolling with a season best time.  Look for this Freshman to put to good use all the experience he gained this season.  Senior Andrew Walter anchored the Leafs season with a tremendous leg as he took the baton folowed by a minor collision in the exchange zone....he roared down the backstretch and just kept coming as he split 49.43 and turned many a head.  The Leafs ended up missing the last qualifying spot by less than a tenth of a second.  The average enrollment of the teams that made the finals was over 2,500 students....not bad for the boys from Northwestern Illinois with an enrollment of 941.

Leafs Finish a Strong 2nd at the Dixon F/S Relays

On Saturday, the Leafs traveled to Dixon to participate in the Dixon F/S Relays.  The team was competing without the services of two of their top youngsters (due to unavoidable family conflicts) and ended up a strong 2nd anyway.  The weather conditions were far from perfect (44 degrees with 25 mph winds.)  This meet is one of the coaching staff's favorites because all individual efforts are added together so we have no weak links, and the team is forced to move athletes into new areas to fill-out the team line-up.  The end result is always a lot of fun with several new discoveries.  A special thanks to all the athletes for such great team support and to those who ventured out of their comfort zone to try new events.  The team was led by Gold Medal efforts in the 3200 Meter Relay, Distance Medley Relay, Mile Team Run, and 800 Meter Relay.  Leaf placers are listed below:

STERLING INVITE BLOWN AWAY

The 2008 Track Season was dealt another tough weather setback via tornadic conditions that brought strong winds and rain with falling temperatures.  The meet had just started when the storm rolled in.  The Long Jump had just begun when Jacob Kuban, Shane Reschke, and Andrew Walter had each just completed one jump before the meet was stopped.  Both Shane and Andrew flew over 22 Feet.  The school record dodged a bullet.

Shoveling Through:
CC Fredericks & Tessie Fredericks attack the March snow.

On Sunday, March 1st several team members said enough is enough and attacked the snow-covered Geneseo High School Track with the goal of clearing the track.  What man can't accomplish the Lord can do in the blink of an eye.  After 5 hours of combined work the exhuased group was forced to give.  Who would have guessed that the weather forecasted high of 48 degrees was actually 20 degrees too low.  68 wonderful degrees for the high melted almost all of the foot-plus snowpack and the Leafs are ready to roll.  A special thanks go to Josh Lodge, Ben Lodge, and Tyler Fox for their efforts.

Grandma Freddy:

On Thursday, August 30th Grace Fredericks celebrated her 97th birthday.  Her birthday was announced during the Cubs broadcast and was a complete surprise to her and was received with a GINOURMOUS SMILE from Grandma Freddy who has been a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan.  She was treated to a 5-4 Cubs victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on her special day.  Grace was born in 1910 (missing the last Cubs world series championship by 2 years.  She has never lost faith.  She was also quite a runner in her day and made a run at the 1928 US Olympic team as a sprinter.

Grandma's race start:

She follows our team closely and wishes each athlete the very best of luck this season.  GO LEAFS

Grace Fredericks left us on Saturday, March 1st.

Her message is to always work hard and give your very best effort.
Take pride in yourself and your team and remember to have fun doing it.

Three Volunteer Assistant Coaches:
Geneseo Young Guns
The Geneseo Boys Track Team welcomes and greatly appreciates the volunteer help of
Coaches Kyle Wickwire, Josh Reschke, & Mike Harrington.

This year's track team has hit the jackpot with the additional coaching talents of Kyle Wickwire, Josh Reschke, and Mike Harrington.

Mike Harrington is a 2nd year teacher in the Social Studies department and is married to his lovely wife, Jill (Geneseo Athletic Department secretary.)  Coach Harrington was a standout athlete for the Sterling Golden Warriors in both football (starting nose guard) and track and field (throws.)  Coach Harrington has a powerful combination of passion and purpose and brings his A-Game to the classroom and practice field each and every day.  Coach Harrington has already been very busy this school year as he coached football running backs and the Freshman girls basketball team.  Coach Harrington will be assisting in the throws and with the distance runners.  We welcome Coach Harrington.

Josh Resche graduated from Monmouth College in 2007.  Josh is a former Maple Leaf standout in Football, Basketball, and Track.  Josh earned numerous honors in both Basketball and Track and Field.  Coach Reschke earned multiple All-Conference Honors and ended his collegiate career in style last season as he threw-down a blazing 46.9 relay split in the NCAA D3 National Finals.  He and brother Luke led Monmouth College to a 2nd place showing in the 1600 Meter Relay and helped the team grab 3rd place as a team.  Brother Luke (now a junior) currently has the fastest 400 Meter time in the NATION.  Coach Reschke will be assisting with the sprints and relays.  We welcome Coach Reschek.

Kyle Wickwire graduated from Luther College in 2007.  Kyle is a former Maple Leaf standout in Football and Track.  Kyle earned numerous All-Conference honors in both Football (kicker) and Track (Jumper.)  Kyle is already a veteran at coaching as he served as the Green Machine's Kicking Coach this past fall.  Kyle will assist in the jumping events.  We welcome Coach Wickwire.
