Welcome to Geneseo Cross Country

Leafs Have Strong Showing in State Finals
On Saturday, November 8th, the Leafs traveled to Peoria to participate in the IHSA State Cross Country Finals. With both teams barely missing qualifying last weekend the team was represented by the threesome of Joann Chenoweth, Stephanie Kennett and Josh Lodge. The last several years the state meet has been greeted with amazingly mild weather. Not in 2008. A high of 37 with strong winds and a strong wind chill factor made for a challenging day of running. These three came ready to roll.
The Girls AA race went off at 11:00 am. Joann and Stephanie got out well and settled into the top 50 running side-by-side. They rolled through the mile in sub 6 and inching forward through the field for the remaining two miles demonstrating savvy racing tactics. They powered down the homestretch and both ran themselves into the top 30, barely missing All-State Honors. Not too bad of a performance for their first state finals. Way to Lead by example. Their teammates were all over the course and vowed to be toeing the line themselves in the fall of 09. Our East Peoria Sectional was well represented as the qualifying teams placed 3-4-5-6-12. The Lady Leafs WERE at least at top 15 team if not a top 10 team. Hopefully, the IHSA will expand the A and AA fields to 25 next fall to be equal to that of the AAA division. GREAT EFFORTS LADIES.
Mr. Lodge powered off the starting line at high noon and roared into the the top 25 by the half mile in the frigid weather. Josh rolled past the mile in 4:58 and the two mile mark in 10:18 (a new P.R.) as the early pace was beginning to take it's toll. Josh held onto the top 35 past the 2 1/2 mile mark but then he ran out of gas in the last 600 meters of the race. He fought every step of the way, desperately trying to limit the damage as the flood gates of runners passing were wide open now. Josh came across the line in a very respectable 60th place and his head held high with pride. He has dreamed of this day for last four years. He was also proud to see his good friend Tim Hird win the individual race and the Dixon Dukes win an exciting 3 point team battle. The East Peoria Sectional dominated the state finals placing all 5 teams in the top 10 (1-3-4-9-10.) GREAT EFFORT JOSH.

State Bound Josh Lodge, Stephanie Kennett, and Joann Chenoweth qualified for the State Finals Meet next Saturday.
LEAFS RUN WILD IN EAST PEORIA
On Saturday the Leafs traveled to East Peoria to participate in the IHSA Sectional Finals hosted at Illinois Central College. Geneseo came ready to roll as all 14 runners (7 girls and 7 boys) ran lifetime bests as they literally ran wild with courage and pride.
The Lady Leafs got the show rolling under perfect weather conditions. Facing the daunting task of facing 6 of the top 9 ranked teams in the state the Lady Leafs exploded off the line at the sound of the gun and the race was on. Joann Chenoweth and Stephanie Kennett found each other early and packed it up together for the entire race. Danielle Dewey, Amy Cosgrove and Paige Gatter all moved into the top 50 after the mile with Jenny Ford and Hilary Lohman not far behind as all 7 runners were running STRONG. When the race was over and the dust had settled, the Lady Leafs team was informed that their heroic efforts had left them only 1 place out of qualifying as a team for the State Finals. Happily, the Lady Leafs will be represented by Co-Captains Joann Chenoweth and Stephanie Kennett who both qualified as individuals.
The Maple Leaf faithful was still buzzing over the girls race when the boys toed the line. The boys task was equally as daunting as 7 of the top 11 ranked teams in the state were in the field. Senior Josh Lodge scorched the first two miles in 10:22 while his teammates were also running well as "da pack" of Anthony Iron Thunder, Thomas Sigwalt, Carlisle Evans-Peck and Kyle Reiling all rolled through 2-miles around 11 flat. Chad Ford and Branden Smith were right on their heels as the team prepared to attack the final mile. The team ran inspired and placed a very respectable 8th as a team. Co-Captain Josh Lodge dug deeper than he ever has and showed just how much senior pride counts as he ROARED down the homestretch and ran himself into next Saturday's State Finals.
Why Class AAA was awarded 5 sectionals and 25 teams into the State Finals while Class A and Class AA only were awarded 4 sectionals and 20 teams in the State Finals is a very unfair inequity that will hopefully be rectified by next year's State Finals. This year's Lady Leafs are a top 15 team that deserved to be racing next weekend. RESULTS

LEAFS ADVANCE AT GALESBURG REGIONAL
On Saturday, October 25th the Leafs traveled to Galesburg to take part in the one of the state's 16 AA Regionals. Needing a top 5 team finish to extend the 2008 season the Leafs brought their A game as they toed the line.
The Lady Leafs rolled to 2nd behind state ranked Dixon as they placed their top five scorers all in the top 17 runners. Leading the way were Joann Chenoweth and Stephanie Kennett who both earned All-Region honors with their 4th and 5th place finishes. Providing strong support were Danielle Dewey (12th), Amy Cosgrove (15th), Paige Gatter (17th), Jenny Ford (23rd) and Hilary Lohman (42nd.)
Pacing the boys team to a strong 3rd place team showing behind state ranked Dixon and Galesburg as they packed their top 5 runners in the top 23 places. Leading the way were Josh Lodge (7th), Anthony Iron Thunder (14th), Thomas Sigwalt (18th), Carlisle Evans-Peck (21st), Kyle Reiling (23rd), Chad Ford (29th) and Branden Smith (40th.)
The Leafs will next be in action at the East Peoria Sectional next weekend. Race times will be 10:30 for the girls and 11:30 for the boys. Come on out and back the Leafs.

STERLING GRASS RELAYS
On Tuesday afternoon, Geneseo traveled to Sterling's Hoover Park to participate in a dual meet with the Sterling Golden Warriors. The meet format is a bit unusual as teammates are paired together alternating in one mile segments until the team has run a total of 6 miles (each athlete runs 3 1-mile repeats.) This has been the traditional season opener for the Leafs for several years now and the teams were greeted with sweltering heat and humidity. The temperature soared above 90 degrees and the heat index was pushed into triple digits. OUCH!
The Lady Leafs placed 2nd to Sterling by a score of 23 to 33. The meet design rewards team depth and that is not a luxury that the Lady Leafs possess this season. Strong efforts were turned in by the entire team. Stephanie Kennett and Joann Chenoweth led the charge with their gold medal performance. Scoring 2nd for the Lady Leafs were the team of Danielle Dewey and Amy Cosgrove who placed 4th.
Pacing the boys team to a win over Sterling (18-43) were the championship pair of Chad Ford and Josh Lodge. The Leafs took the top 3 team positions showing good depth as Kyle Reiling and Carlise Evans-Peck took 2nd and Chris Bisom and Thomas Sigwalt placed 3rd.
The Leafs will next be in action on Saturday as they participate in the powerful 16-team Galesburg Invitational.
