Welcome to English 7
Supplies Needed:
All students will need the general supplies of
wide
ruled notebook paper, blue or black pens and a red pen,
plus
pencils.

Course content and objectives:
The general objectives of this course are:
to improve written expression.
to develop an understanding of several genres of
literature while developing reading skills.
to teach basic methods of research.
to stimulate oral and listening skills.
to encourage pleasurable and thoughtful reading.
During the year students will improve writing skills
through
the use of the "Six Traits of Writing" while exploring such
genres
of literature as poetry, realism, historical fiction,
nonfiction,
adventure, and mystery.

Students will study the
elements
(character, setting, conflict, plot, and theme) of the short
story
and novel while emphasis is placed on reading comprehension. The strategies of predicting, questioning, summarizing, connecting, and inferencing will form the basis of reading lessons.
The course will be taught to multiple
intelligences
through a variety of teaching methods. Students
will frequently
be involved in cooperative learning activities for the
development
of appropriate social skills. Throughout the year
instruction in
various computer skills will enhance the course.

Weekly direct instruction will take place in the
areas of grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary while at the same time
focus will be placed on applying these skills in written
assignments. (A different area will be worked on each day of the week
in the form of mini lessons which are separate from the unit of study
currently being covered.) Students will be encouraged to become better
spellers by increasing their use of the dictionary. In so doing,
students will hopefully become more accountable for their spelling
accuracy.
To create life long readers student-choice reading
will be the emphasis on Fridays. Each Friday students will be
encouraged to read. . . . through book talks, library time, and free
reading time. Once again emphasis will be placed on the reading strategies
of predicting, questioning, summarizing, connecting, inferencing, and evaluating. Two book
projects and several reading responses will be required assignments.
Grades are based on daily work, class participation,
organizational skills, writing assignments, research work, special
projects, and quizzes. Very few tests are given.
