Poetry

The genre of poetry is used all year long in seventh grade English as more than a literature study.  Each week a mini lesson is given on Tuesdays involving the "Poem of the Week."  Students are given a copy of the poem and then discuss it.  Many aspects of language arts are covered in this discussion with emphasis on the six writing traits.

During the actual poetry unit, students research a famous poet and then produce a keynote presentation to the class.  Writing their own original poetry is a vital part of this unit and students are remarkably very good poets, themselves.
