Insect Unit
SCIENCE INSECT PROJECT
The first 6th grade science unit is the study of insects. With
this unit, all 6th grade science students will be assigned their first
“project” of the year…a Science Insect Project. We will spend the first quarter learning about and examining insects. In this
study, you will gain knowledge about the scientific
classification system, characteristics of insects including internal
and external anatomy, insect life cycles, harmful and beneficial issues
with insects, and an in-depth look at five insect orders (Coleoptera,
Hymenoptera, Orthoptera, Lepidoptera, and Diptera).
Each student is expected to collect one insect from each of the insect
orders listed above. These insects need to be preserved in the freezer
until it’s time to bring them to school. (This helps with the
smell!) Protection in a sturdy container is also important.
During Science class you will use reference books to identify the name
of the specimen and will be asked to write down some information about
your insect in an “Insect Journal.” Your insect will become part
of a classroom collection. Please
understand that the only task to be completed at home is the actual
collection of the insect. Identification will occur at school. It is important that you begin collecting insects NOW.
Two grades will be earned for this project, each worth 100 points. The first grade is based upon the number of insects that you collect and is listed below. The second grade is based on the quality of work on your journal sheets. You will have additional grades during this unit from homework, classwork, quizzes, tests, etc.
10 insects = A+ 9 insects = A 8 insects = A- 7 insects = B+ 6 insects = B 5 insects = B- 4 insects = C 3 insects = D 2 insects = D- 1 or 0 = F
